All the books are printed in A4. They
have plastic ring binding, with the back cover of card and the front of
clear plastic. The images shown are of these reprints themselves.
High quality paper is used with virtually
no show-through.
The number of pages in each book as shown
in the list is pretty accurate, but may sometimes include several original
advertisements for instruments or other publications. These are nevertheless
interesting in themselves, for although the JAT catalogue is well known,
there are others, for example in "Merton Unbound", which are
unusual and intriguing -- Where is all that music now?

Some of the original books have pencilled
crosses or ticks or perhaps note names written in. Most of these kinds of
blemishes - for example there were even motorcycle tyre marks on virtually
every page of "Merton Unbound"(!) - I have erased. Some have,
however, slipped through the net. I suppose one might just about suggest
they have a kind of historical validity…
All the original books from which these
photo prints were made are part of my own collection, with the exception of The
Complete Guide.. which is owned by David Stacey.
Douglas Parry (JAT) has generously
allowed the reproduction of Morley’s Tutor, copyright permission has been
obtained for The
Cultivation of the Hands.
The measurements of the originals given
here (some have been rounded up to the nearest inch) represent old imperial
sizes - 10"x 14" was known, I believe, as Crown Folio - and
the proportions of these do not always lie happily on A4...
There are two more volumes in
preparation: A book of songs for voice and banjo or guitar and a very rare
1872 Converse tutor.
