Peter Bentley contacted us recently with the following
question:"...if you could throw some light on the Windsor Banjo that
I have inherited from my grandfather Albert Henry Bentley who lived in
Buxton Derbyshire from 1878 - 1939.
The Banjo has a badge in the centre of the resonator
describing it as "The Windsor - Patent 22234". The 5th String
disappears into the neck at the 5th Fret and emerges at the machine head.
It looks as if it has been chromium plated at some time however this has
almost completely disappeared. It has 24 frets including the nut and an
inlaid keyboard. I have attached some photographs of the banjo and what I
assume is an original leather case."
It is, of course, a beautiful example of an early
Windsor zither-banjo - what we tend to call an "Type 40" (no
apologies to Terry Nation!).
Peter was kind enough to allow us to use his
photographs - Thanks!
